Jager is Director of East Asian Studies at Oberlin College, Ohio, in the United States. Each of these documents key historical moments, with some overlap: the Korean War itself, which began as a civil war, covering 1945-1953 the Cold War phase, which lasted from 1953 until 1973 when US troops finally pulled out of Vietnam the local struggle, from the end of the1960s to the 1990s, which saw an intensification of competition between North and South Korea, and lastly, the post Cold War period, from the early 1990s to the present day, as relations between North Korea and the West gradually deteriorated. The narrative is divided into four main sections.
