His intent is, he writes, "to highlight some of the major controversies and issues in the Viking age rather than provide a comprehensive introduction to the subject" The varied illustrations provide detail and context. Author John Haywood provides a tight narrative nugget for each of his topics, while the accompanying map shows where the action is taking place. This book covers the age of Viking exploration, piracy, warfare, settlement, and, bloody mercenary service, those fun years from AD 1 to 1500 in this telling. This is a good addition to Penguin Books' many titles in this genre. It's subject matter can range from a time period, to a region or country, or a historical period. It comes in sizes ranging from coffee table tome to pocket size and travel-friendly. It unites history and geography, and provides great visual representations of architecture, museum items, landscapes, artwork, and people. The historical atlas is a wonderful hybrid of a book.

Despite all of the warnings, it is an amazing series. Trigger warnings pertaining to Rape, Torture, Drug and Alcohol abuse, and a couple more (Like seriously, on Tumblr there is an entire list of warnings that might keep you from reading the books) 3. This series, maybe not book 1, but definitely 2 and 3, should have a lot of warnings in them. That's more on book 3 though, so read at your own risk and know what you're getting into. There isn't anything porny, but they do end up doing things. Two of the main characters end up in a 'relationship'. On that note, I've got some warnings to pass out to those of you on the fence about this series. As someone who has owned the physical and kindle books for a good 5 or so years now, I'm going to say this: I've been waiting for the audio versions for so very long that this sorta feels like a dream. The hellbound heart by clive barker6/6/2023 While Barker is critical of organized religion, he has stated that he is a believer in both God and the afterlife, and that the Bible influences his work.įans have noticed of late that Barker's voice has become gravelly and coarse. This award is presented "to an openly lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender individual who has made a significant difference in promoting equal rights for any of those communities". In 2003, Clive Barker received The Davidson/Valentini Award at the 15th GLAAD Media Awards. Barker's second long-term relationship, with photographer David Armstrong, ended in 2009. Speedboat by Renata Adler6/6/2023 That spring, out of the blue, it seemed like everyone I knew was reading and discussing Adler. With the recent publication of After the Tall Timber (New York Review Books, 2015), a collection of Adler’s nonfiction that spans four decades, it’s hard not to recall 2013, the year of her return. The ghost of Adler’s casual but poignant introduction-“I thought for a while, as I guess people do when they get older, that maybe we are the last generation of readers… and maybe we are all the last generation of writers, too, in the old sense,”-still lingered. The crowd skewed young literary tote bags dotted the floor. Her reading had been studded with self-interruptions-was she too loud? going long?-and the audience had grown vocal, eager for more. In 2013, during a rare appearance at the Center for Fiction in New York, Renata Adler squinted to address a packed house. Pirate king's daughter6/6/2023 Meanwhile, at Versailles, after a failed assassination attempt on his life, King Louis XIV ( Pierce Brosnan) takes the advice of an unscrupulous "doctor" named Labarthe ( Pablo Schreiber), sending an expedition to find the lost city of Atlantis, capture a mermaid, bring her back to Versailles, and sacrifice her during the upcoming lunar eclipse. She is also, apparently, a genius cellist. Marie-Josephe has no idea her dad is the monarch. Narrated by Julie Andrews, the film's fairy-tale "Once upon a time" opening shows the illegitimate daughter of the Sun King, Marie-Josephe ( Kaya Scodelario), cavorting in the sea, as the nuns at the convent where Marie-Josephe has been stashed away stand on the beach ordering her to get out of the water. "The King's Daughter" has arrived, seven years behind schedule, and she must be dealt with accordingly. It's a mystery as to what really went down here, and you can only squint at Hollywood Reporter articles for so long, wishing for an anonymous source to give the first-hand scoop. Wherever it was spent, the money is not on the screen. Besides, the special effects aren't particularly creative and/or eye-catching, and in some cases look shockingly amateur. Maybe this caused some of the holdup, but not all of it. What has been going on for the last seven years? Why was this film held up for so long? The budget was a grotesque 40 million, with a massive infusion late in the game to improve the special effects. Flesh Eaters by L.A. Morse6/5/2023
Puzzle me this eli easton6/5/2023 A crossword puzzle that held clues that someone was watching him. One: the first set of communication came unexpectedly and out of the blue, catching game builder Luke unawares. I had seen this book years ago, but had not picked it up for whatever reason. Eli Easton’s Puzzle Me This was a very descriptive book, considering what one of the main characters did for a living. Some books make you taste and feel the words. And, most puzzling of all, how do you know if love is real? When Luke decodes them, romance begins, but then they face greater puzzles, like Alex’s interfering sister and what commitment to a man in a wheelchair really takes. His solution? Secret messages for Luke in the crosswords he writes for the local paper. Alex’s options are limited: he’s too shy to approach Luke and his wheelchair won’t let him follow into the woods. The watcher is Alex Shaw, and he too works from home, designing logic and crossword puzzles. Every day he walks his dog in the woods nearby, never suspecting that someone who is completely smitten is watching. Luke Schumaker designs computer games, working from his home. |
